Charlotte Isabella Gilmore walked her dark bay gelding into the Dressage arena. They were new to the school; it was their first day there. However, Charlotte wanted to get Jody, her 4-year-old Thoroughbred, used to his surroundings. The first place that popped in her mind was the Dressage arena. Charlotte was more skilled than Jody when it came to Dressage; she knew her collections, extentions, sidepasses, simple lead changs, flying lead changes and halts. Jody, on the other hand, only knew the bare minimum of his paces. He was learning his simple lead changes and Charlotte was working on his halts and transitions. However, with a natural horsemanship background, Jody bent his head nicely at the poll when he worked. He was learning and that was what was important. Anyway, in the Dressage classes that he competed in, he only needed to know his paces and trasitions. If they asked for extentions, Charlotte had a trick up her sleeve.
Charlotte walked Jody into the middle of the ring. She then gave Jody some slack in the 22ft rope lead that was snapped to his matching rope halter. She kissed to him twice and waved the carrot stick by his back leg. Sensing it, Jody sprung off into a trot. He took the slack of the rope as Charlotte gave it to him and trotted in a circle around his favourite person. Charlotte kept the carrot stick by her side, only waving it at Jody's haunches when he tried to slow down to the walk.
"And...," Charlotte said in a quiet voice, "canter." She waved the stick at his haunches and Jody picked up his canter. Charlotte gave him more slack for the faster pace. As Jody went around, his inside ear thingyed toward his owner, Charlotte clsoed her eyes and relaxed her body. She listened carefully to Jody's hoofbeats. The gelding's hoof hit the ground slower and slower until there were no more hoofbeats. Charlotte then open her eyes. Jody began to walk into her. She smiled at him. "Good boy!" she praised him, glad that she had joined up with him in a new place. She then began the lounging/join-up in the other direction.
